About me
I'm Norwegian guy born in 1982 with a big interest in computers and technology.
I've been tinkering with computers more or less for the last 15 years, so I guess you could call me a computer geek :)
At the moment I'm living in Oslo were I work at a Sykehuspartner which is a company that delivers computer services for the hospitals in Oslo among others. After working a few years in a couple of grocery stores and in an electronics store, I finally decided to finish my computer education. It took me some years to realize that computers is what I want to do as a profession, and not just as a hobby. So after I got unemployed because of the finance crisis I moved from Tromsø to Trondheim and got started on my last year towards my ICT certificate, which I started on for almost 10 years ago, but I have been sort of undecided about what I want to be when I grow up. Finally I decided that I wanted to use my skills with computers as a profession. So now that I've got my certificate my new career as an IT professional has just began.
My experience with computers
I've been playing around with computers since I was around 10-11 years old. I remember the days when trying to be able to play a game with both mouse, cd-rom and sound support in MS-DOS was a real case of trial and error by messing around with autoexec.bat and config.sys to get enough conventional memory. Then it was Windows 95, 98, 2000, XP and 7 (which I dual boot with now if I occasionally want to kill time with some gaming).
But around 2000 I discovered GNU/Linux through a friend of mine. Starting of with Slackware, which really opened my eyes for a new way of being in control of my own computer. After Slackware I've been through several other distributions, but more of that in my Linux distributions page.
Most of my experience with computers are within the desktop usage area, but I have some experience with networking too, but the latter is something I've just started to learn seriously for the last couple of months even though I feel I've got a lot of understanding of the topic and technologies involved (Active Directory, TCP/IP and so on, I just have not so much experience. This is of course changing rapidly now that I've started to finalize my education.
Why this blog?
This blog is mainly meant as a place to write howto's and such, mostly for GNU/Linux and other Open Source software, but I might write some for Windows too.
I write this Blog to help new GNU/Linux users to get started, but I will also write posts that I hope more advanced users will benefit from.
So if you feel you have something to contribute with, please write a comment :)
Why that cryptic name for your blog?
chmod 777 * is a *nix command that gives a file or directory the permission settings; read, write and execute for everyone. A better explanation of this will come in a later post. But it just means that I wanted to share my notes and howto's for an audience, and also give access for comments. This is also why I write in English and not in Norwegian which is my native language. This will of course explain why my English isn't perfect, but practice make master, right? :)
Target audience
My target audience would be everyone who finds this blog interesting, obviously :) Though I will try to cover topics that people mainly new to GNU/Linux would find interesting, but I will also write posts that might be more advanced and targeted for everyone who wants to learn something new about computers, GNU/Linux, Windows and everything in between.
So finally I want to thank everyone who might be reading this blog, and please leave a comment if you feel you have something to add. But please be serious when commenting, I will delete comments which I think are inappropriate.
